AC and HVAC
When your AC runs but doesn't cool, check seven things first: the thermostat setting, the air filter, the breakers, the vents, the outdoor unit, ice on the lines and the drain line. These checks take about 15 minutes. If none of them fixes it, the problem is inside the system.

Turn the system off at the thermostat, or set it to fan only to thaw faster. Don't chip at the ice. Running a frozen system strains the compressor.
Thawing can take a few hours. Then replace the filter and restart the system. If the coil freezes again within a day, the cause is airflow or refrigerant, and it needs a repair.
Water pooling near the indoor unit? Turn the AC off to stop the overflow, then call us. In a closet or attic install, that water can reach ceilings and floors.
If the seven checks don't bring cold air back, these are the usual culprits:
Our air conditioning repair and HVAC repair pages explain each of these fixes.
Dallas summers keep air conditioners running for hours without a break. The area logged 55 days of 100 degrees or more in 2023, according to the National Weather Service. Heat wears out capacitors and fan motors faster. A system that struggles in June often fails in August.

Yes. Set the thermostat to off, or to fan only to speed up thawing. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, the most expensive part. Once the ice melts, check the filter. If the coil freezes again, call for a repair.
The most common causes are a dirty filter, a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit, a thermostat set to fan instead of cool, a blocked outdoor unit or a failed capacitor. A frozen coil and a low refrigerant charge are others. The first four are safe to check yourself.
No. Carrier warns that capacitors hold a high voltage charge even with the power off. Touching the terminals can cause a serious shock. If the outdoor fan hums but does not spin, switch the system off and call a repairman.
