Your ice maker is probably working if a side-by-side fridge makes about 4 to 4.5 pounds of ice a day. A top-freezer model should make about 3.5 pounds. Those are GE's published figures for its refrigerators. Many ice makers that seem broken are simply slow, so compare your output first.
Step 1: Your fridge style
Step 2: How much ice do you get in a day?
Normal for your fridge
GE's normal output figures by fridge style:
| Fridge style | Normal daily output | Normal cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side | About 4 to 4.5 lb, or 100 to 130 cubes | 7 cubes every 70 to 80 minutes |
| Top freezer | About 3.5 lb, or 100 cubes | 7 cubes every 70 to 80 minutes |
| French door or multi-door | Varies by model, so check your manual | Smaller ice makers can cycle every 39 to 49 minutes |
If your output is close to these numbers, the ice maker is working. Frequent door openings and a nearly empty freezer slow production, per GE. If you get little or no ice, keep reading.

We repair the ice maker problems homeowners call about most:
We repair and replace the ice maker module, water inlet valve, fill tube, dispenser and auger motor. We work on ice makers in side-by-side, French door, top-freezer and bottom-freezer refrigerators.
An ice maker usually stops making ice for one of five reasons. The shutoff arm or switch is off, or the freezer is too warm. The water supply may be closed, the filter clogged, or the fill tube frozen. Check them in that order, since each check takes only a few minutes.
If all five check out, the water inlet valve or the ice maker module has likely failed. Those need testing with a meter.
A new ice maker can take up to 24 hours to make its first ice, according to GE. The freezer has to reach about 15°F before the ice maker starts cycling. Throw out the first few batches, since they can taste off. If you still have no ice after a full day, check the water supply.
Small or hollow cubes usually mean the ice mold isn't getting enough water. The most common causes are a clogged water filter, low water pressure or a partly blocked inlet valve screen. Fix.com notes that low household water pressure can stop an ice maker from filling properly. Start with the filter.
Dallas tap water is moderately hard, at about 8 to 9 grains per gallon. That's according to Dallas Water Utilities' 2024 water quality report. Over time, minerals build up on the inlet valve screen and inside the fill tube. Less water gets through, so the cubes shrink.
See our guide to Dallas hard water for more ways to slow scale buildup.
Fix.com recommends replacing the filter twice a year, or more often with hard water. If new filters don't help, the inlet valve may need replacing.

An ice maker usually leaks because the fill tube froze, the inlet valve is failing, or the fridge isn't level. When the fill tube freezes, water overflows into the freezer and turns into ice sheets. A leak behind the fridge often points to a loose water line or a cracked valve.
Water still pooling? Call 214-406-5754 or 269-227-0382 before it damages your floor. Returning customers get $35 off their next repair.
Most refrigerator ice makers reset by turning them off, waiting, then turning them back on. Use the ice maker's switch, or lift the wire arm and lower it again. On some models, unplugging the fridge for a minute also resets the controls. Reset steps vary by brand, so check your owner's manual.
A reset clears a stuck cycle. It won't fix a failed inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or a bad ice maker module. If ice doesn't return within a day after a reset, the problem is a part, not a glitch.
Usually yes, if the fridge itself still cools well. The ice maker module and inlet valve are separate parts, so they can be replaced without replacing the fridge. A refrigerator lasts about 13 years, per the National Association of Home Builders. So an ice maker repair often makes sense well past the halfway mark.
Here's how we'd weigh it:
If the fridge has bigger problems, see our refrigerator repair page. We'll tell you honestly if a repair isn't worth it.

Ice soaks up odors from food in the freezer, and old ice gets stale. Sears lists odor absorption, an old water filter and a worn ice mold coating as causes. Dump the old ice, replace the water filter and wrap strong-smelling food. If the taste returns, the ice maker module may need replacing.
Yes, as long as the fridge and freezer still hold the right temperature. Turn the ice maker off so it stops trying to fill. If it's leaking, also close the water valve behind the fridge. Then call us when it's convenient, since a broken ice maker rarely affects food safety.
Set the freezer to 0°F for steady ice production, per Sears Home Services. Above 5°F, the ice maker slows down or stops. GE notes the freezer must reach about 15°F before a new ice maker starts cycling. Keep the freezer about three-fourths full, since GE says that helps production.
Clumps form when ice partly melts and refreezes. Common causes are a freezer running too warm, frequent door openings or ice sitting unused for weeks. Empty the bin, check that the freezer is at 0°F and use ice more often. If clumping continues, the dispenser auger or door seal may need repair.
Most ice maker repairs take one visit when the part is on hand. A clogged fill tube or a new inlet valve is usually a quicker job. A full ice maker module swap takes a bit longer. After any repair, it can take up to 24 hours for ice production to return to normal.
