Gas & Electric Ovens and Ranges
Mayfair Enterprises offers oven repair in Dallas, TX for gas and electric ovens, ranges and cooktops. We aim to fix your oven the same day you call. Most ovens need one part, such as an igniter, bake element or temperature sensor, not a whole new range.

Step 1: Your range type
Step 2: What's it doing?
| Fuel | Symptom | Likely cause | Safe check first | Call us when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gas | Oven won't heat | Weak or failed igniter | Watch the igniter through the bottom panel slots for one minute | It glows but no flame lights |
| Gas | Slow to preheat | Weak igniter or faulty temperature sensor | Make sure foil isn't lining the oven floor | Preheat runs well past 15 minutes |
| Gas | Burner clicks but won't light | Wet or misaligned burner cap, clogged ports | Dry the burner and reseat the cap so it sits flat | It still won't light once dry |
| Gas | Burner clicks nonstop | Moisture in the spark switch, or a failed switch | Let the cooktop dry for a day after a spill | Clicking continues with the knob off |
| Gas | Yellow or uneven flame | Dirty burner ports | Clear the ports with a straight pin | The flame stays yellow after cleaning |
| Electric | Won't heat, lights still work | Tripped breaker half or failed bake element | Reset the range's double breaker | The element shows a blister or break |
| Electric | Broiler works, bake doesn't | Burned-out bake element | Look at the lower element for damage | You see a break or bright spot |
| Electric | Wrong temperature | Faulty sensor or control board | Test with an oven thermometer at 350°F | It's off by 15°F or more |
| Electric | Glass cooktop burner won't heat | Failed radiant element or infinite switch | Try a different burner with the same pan | One burner stays dead |
| Electric | Burner stuck on high | Failed infinite switch | Turn the range off at the breaker | Any burner won't turn down |

We repair the problems that stop a kitchen cold:
Gas and electric ranges fail in different ways. Gas ovens most often need a new igniter, burner parts or a safety valve. Electric ovens most often need a bake element, broil element, temperature sensor or control board relay. We repair both types on freestanding and slide-in ranges and cooktops.
When the cooktop burners light but the oven won't, the oven igniter is the usual cause. Cooktop burners use a spark, while the oven uses a separate hot surface igniter. That igniter must also open the oven's gas safety valve. A worn igniter can glow brightly yet fail to open the valve, so no gas reaches the burner.
Here's what happens when you turn on a gas oven:
This sequence normally takes about a minute, according to PartSelect's repair guide.
Igniters wear out slowly. As one ages, it draws less current. It can still glow orange but no longer draw enough current to open the valve. That's why "it's glowing, so it's fine" is a common wrong guess.
A repairman tests the igniter's current draw with a meter to know for sure. Before you call, check that the gas valve behind the range is in the "On" position. Whirlpool lists a closed gas valve as one cause of a gas oven that won't heat.

An electric oven that won't heat usually has a tripped breaker, a burned-out bake element or a bad sensor. Electric ranges run on 240 volts through a double breaker. If one half trips, the clock and light may still work, but the elements won't heat. Check the breaker before anything else.
If all four look fine, the cause is usually a thermal fuse, a wiring fault or a control board relay. Those need testing with a meter. That's a job for us.
Most ovens take at least 12 to 15 minutes to preheat, depending on the temperature set, per KitchenAid. If yours takes much longer, look for foil on the oven floor or a door that doesn't close fully. Both let heat escape. If neither is the cause, the igniter or element is likely weak.
To check accuracy, place an oven thermometer on the middle rack and set the oven to 350°F. Wait 20 minutes, then read it. Whirlpool says a reading off by 15°F or more may need calibration or a sensor repair.

If you smell gas near your range, leave your home right away. Don't flip light switches, unplug anything or use your phone inside. From outside, call 911 and Atmos Energy, the Dallas gas utility, at 866-322-8667. Only call us once the gas company says it's safe.
Signs that a gas oven needs repair right away, even without a strong smell:
Turn the oven off and don't keep trying to light it.
A freestanding range is safe from tipping only if an anti-tip bracket holds it to the wall or floor. Without one, a child standing on the open oven door can pull the range over. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recorded 13 tip-over deaths from 2000 to 2008. Many involved children under 10.
Range tip-overs also sent about 1,700 people a year to emergency rooms between 2006 and 2008, per the CPSC. The commission advises checking that the bracket is secure and that the range sits in it.
If your range was moved or replaced, the bracket may be missing. Many makers send a replacement bracket at no cost. Ask us to check for it during your repair visit.

Yes, in most cases, because ranges outlast most kitchen appliances. A gas range lasts about 15 years and an electric range about 13, per the National Association of Home Builders. So a 10-year-old range often has years left. An igniter, bake element or sensor repair is usually worth doing.
Here's how we'd weigh it:
We'll tell you honestly if a repair isn't worth it.

No, not on most modern gas ovens. They use a hot surface igniter, and its current opens the gas safety valve. Without that current, the valve stays closed, so no gas reaches the burner. Forcing it is unsafe, and replacing the weak igniter restores normal lighting.
Worn door hinges or springs are the usual cause, or a damaged door gasket. A door that doesn't seal lets heat escape, which KitchenAid lists as a reason ovens heat poorly. Check for food stuck in the hinge slots first. If the door still won't close, the hinges need replacing.
Let the oven cool completely, which can take an hour or more. Then switch the range off at the breaker for one minute and turn it back on. Many locks release after this reset. If the door stays locked, the lock motor or control board has likely failed.
The broil element at the top of the oven has most likely burned out. Look for a break, blister or bright spot while it's cool. On a gas range, the broil burner may have its own failed igniter. Either part can be replaced without replacing the range.
Most oven repairs take one visit when the part is on hand. Replacing an igniter or bake element is usually quicker, while a control board takes longer. If a part must be ordered, we come back as soon as it arrives. We test-heat the oven before we leave.
A cracked glass top usually means replacing the whole glass panel, which is a larger repair. On an older range, replacing the range can make more sense. Stop using the cracked burner until it's checked. A burner that won't heat on intact glass is simpler, usually a radiant element or infinite switch.
