In most frost free fridges, the cold air is made in the freezer. A fan then pushes some of it into the fresh food side. So when the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, the cold air isn't getting through. The usual causes are a dead evaporator fan, a frozen coil or blocked vents.
Open the freezer and listen. You should hear a fan running while the fridge cools. Silence, or a scraping sound, points to a failed fan motor or a blade stuck in ice.
The fridge melts frost off its cooling coil a few times a day. If a defrost heater, sensor or timer fails, ice keeps building until air can't pass. A thick white frost on the freezer's back panel is the tell.
A packed freezer can cover the vent that feeds the fridge side. Move items away from the back wall first. If cooling returns within a few hours, that was the problem.
Some fridge sounds are normal. Gurgling, popping and a soft hum come from refrigerant moving and the defrost cycle. These sounds usually point to a part that needs attention:
If ice works but water doesn't, the dispenser line in the door may be frozen. That's common when the freezer is set too cold. If neither works, check that the supply valve is open and the line behind the fridge isn't kinked. Replace the water filter if it's older than 6 months. A slow trickle usually means a clogged filter or low water pressure. No water at all, with good pressure, often points to a failed water inlet valve or dispenser switch.
A few simple checks solve some cooling problems without a service visit. They take about ten minutes. Samsung lists most of these in its own not cooling guide.

Repair usually wins if the fridge is under about 10 years old. The repair should also cost less than half the price of a new one. That 50% rule is a common benchmark. Past that point, replacing often makes more sense.

Many Dallas homes keep a second fridge in the garage. In July and August, that garage can get hotter than the fridge was built to handle. Most standard refrigerators are designed for rooms between 50°F and 100°F, per Sears Home Services.
