Chest, Upright and Fridge Freezers
When a freezer stops freezing with a load of meat inside, keep the door shut. A closed, full freezer holds its cold for about 48 hours, according to the FDA. That gives you time to get freezer repair in Dallas before the food is lost.

Your frozen food is likely still safe if it has ice crystals or reads 40°F or below. The FDA says that food can be refrozen or cooked. A full freezer stays cold about 48 hours with the door closed, and a half-full one about 24. When you can't tell, throw it out.
Step 1: How full is the freezer?
Step 2: How long has it been warm?
Step 3: Does the food still have ice crystals, or read 40°F or below?

Every time you open the door, warm Dallas air rushes in. So act fast and keep it closed in between.
We handle the freezer problems Dallas homeowners call about most:
If the freezer is cold but your fresh food section is warm, see our refrigerator repair page.
We test and replace evaporator fans, condenser fans, start relays and temperature controls. We also fix defrost heaters, defrost sensors, door gaskets and drain lines. Compressor problems get a full diagnosis before we suggest any repair.
A freezer usually stops freezing because cold air can't move or the cooling system has a failed part. Mr. Appliance lists overpacking, frost on the coils and dirty condenser coils as common causes. A broken evaporator fan, start relay or door seal is also common. Start with the free checks below.
Call us if the freezer is silent, clicks every few minutes, or runs without getting cold. Those point to a start relay, fan motor, control or compressor. Mr. Appliance warns that relay work carries a shock risk. So leave electrical parts to a pro.
Frost builds up when warm, moist air gets in or the defrost system stops working. A torn door gasket or a lid left ajar lets humid air in. In a frost-free freezer, a failed defrost heater or sensor lets ice cover the coils. The freezer then gets warmer, even as frost grows.
Manual defrost freezers are different. Most chest freezers need you to defrost them by hand, so some frost is normal.
Defrost a chest freezer when the frost is about 1/4 inch thick. GE says to defrost at 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Sears says that's usually every 6 to 12 months. Unplug it, move food to coolers, drain the water and wipe it dry before restarting.

Yes, if it's rated for it. GE and Whirlpool say garage-ready freezers work in rooms between 0°F and 110°F. A standard freezer struggles in a hot garage, and Whirlpool warns its compressor can burn out from the strain. Check your freezer's manual for its rated room temperature.
Dallas summers push that limit. The National Weather Service lists a normal Dallas high near 96°F in July and August. Dallas also averages about 20 days a year at 100°F or hotter. A closed garage often runs warmer than the air outside.

Each freezer style fails in its own way. Here's what we look at first on each one:
The fix is usually a single part. A failed compressor is the costly exception, so we test it before anything else.
Usually yes, unless the compressor has failed on an older unit. A freezer lasts about 11 years, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Fans, relays, gaskets and defrost parts can be replaced at almost any age. A dead compressor on a freezer near 11 years is often not worth fixing.
Here's how we'd weigh it:
We'll tell you honestly if a repair isn't worth it.
The model number is usually on a label inside the lid of a chest freezer. On an upright, check inside the door frame.

Yes, if the food still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below. The FDA says that food can be safely refrozen or cooked. Quality may drop a little, but it's safe. Throw out food that has sat above 40°F, and anything that smells or looks off.
A freezer that never shuts off is struggling to reach 0°F. Dirty condenser coils, a leaking door gasket and a hot garage are common causes. Clean the coils and test the seal with a dollar bill. If it still runs nonstop, a fan or the defrost system may have failed.
Leaks usually come from melting frost that can't drain. In frost-free freezers, a clogged defrost drain sends water onto the floor or into the bottom of the freezer. A chest freezer may also leak after a power loss as frost melts. Wipe it up and check the drain plug.
