Washer or Dryer Down? Plano Laundry Repair, Symptom by Symptom

A broken washer or dryer backs up a busy household fast. Start with the symptom below. It tells you the likely cause, what you can safely check, and when a repairman needs to take over.

What you seeLikely causeCheck it yourselfCall us when
Washer won't drainClogged drain pump or coin trapLook for socks or coins in the pump filter, if your model has oneWater stays in the drum after a reset

Front load washers fail differently from top load models. A front loader's door seal holds water after every wash. So odor and mold show up there first. Top load washers wear out lid switches and drive parts instead.

See our washer repair and dryer repair pages for more detail.

Why a Slow Dryer Is a Safety Issue

A dryer that takes two cycles is often a dryer with a clogged vent. That matters more than wasted time. US fire departments respond to about 2,900 home dryer fires each year, according to the US Fire Administration. The leading cause, at 34%, is failure to clean. Those fires peak in January, when loads are heavier and clothes dry indoors.

Plano's Hard Water Is Hard on Dishwashers

Plano buys its water from the North Texas Municipal Water District. The district's 2024 water quality report shows hardness as high as 165 ppm at its Wylie treatment plant. That's hard water, and dishwashers take the brunt of it.

Minerals in the water leave scale on every surface they touch. Watch for these signs:

Three habits slow the damage. First, clean the dishwasher filter every few months. Second, descale the machine a few times a year, as Bosch recommends in its own care guide. Third, keep the rinse aid dispenser full, since it helps water sheet off glass.

Scale becomes a repair once it clogs the inlet valve, blocks the spray arms or coats the heating element. At that point, cleaning won't bring the machine back. Our dishwasher repair page covers those fixes. The same hard water also builds up inside ice makers and slows their fill.

Smart Washer Showing a Code? What to Do Before You Call

Many newer Plano laundry rooms have WiFi capable Samsung and LG washers. These machines report problems as short codes. On Samsung washers, for example, 4C points to a water supply problem and 5C points to a drain problem. On LG washers, OE means the washer can't drain and IE means water isn't coming in.

Samsung also offers Smart Care. Hold the Smart Care button on the washer or dryer. Then scan the code on the display with the Samsung app. The app suggests fixes based on the result. It doesn't need WiFi to work, according to Samsung support.

Before you call us, do two things:

  1. Photograph the code exactly as it appears on the display.
  2. Photograph the model tag. It's usually inside the door or lid.

With both photos, we can often tell which part is likely at fault before we arrive. A code that comes back right after a reset usually means a real part has failed, not a glitch.

East Plano Homes and West Plano Homes Break Down Differently

The median Plano home was built in 1991. So many kitchens here are on their second or third set of appliances. Where you live in Plano shapes what tends to fail.

East and central Plano

Neighborhoods such as Los Rios, Parker Road Estates and Town West grew in the 1970s and 1980s. Laundry rooms are often compact, and dryer vents can run a long way to an outside wall. Older water shutoff valves under sinks and behind washers may also be stiff or partly closed. That quietly starves a dishwasher or washer of water.

West Plano

Willow Bend, Deerfield and the Legacy area filled in from the late 1990s onward. Kitchens here more often have built in refrigerators and appliances run by control boards and sensors. These fail less from wear and more from electronics. So we start with the error code and the board, not a guess.

What Happens When You Book a Repair With Mayfair

Here's how a Plano repair works with us, from first call to working appliance:

  1. You reach us. Call Sam or Reese, send a WhatsApp message, or fill in the request form. We call back the same day.
  2. We set a time. You get a visit time on that call, and we aim for the same day.
  3. We find the fault. The repairman tests the parts, not just the symptoms, and shows you what failed.
  4. You decide. We explain the fault and the fix before any work starts. Say yes and we fix it. Say no and there's no pressure.
  5. We repair and test. We run the appliance through a full cycle before we leave. If a part has to be ordered, you know the plan before we go.

What a Typical "Dryer Won't Heat" Call Looks Like

A dryer that tumbles but stays cold is one of the most common laundry calls. Here's how we work through it.

First, we check power. An electric dryer runs on two breakers. If only one trips, the drum still turns but the heater gets nothing. Next, we check airflow at the outside vent flap. Then we test the thermal fuse, the thermostats and the heating element with a meter.

Often the thermal fuse has blown. But the fuse is rarely the real problem. It blows because the dryer ran too hot, and a clogged vent is the usual reason. So we clear the vent too. Swap only the fuse and the new one blows within weeks. That's the difference between replacing a part and fixing the dryer.

Fix It or Replace It? A Real Example

Two things decide it: the appliance's age and the part that failed. Take a 7 year old front load washer with a failed drain pump. A washer lasts about 10 years on average, so this one still has years left. A drain pump is also a routine part. In that case, fix it.

Change one detail and the answer flips. If that same washer were 11 years old, or the drum bearings had failed, replacement would usually make more sense. We'll tell you which side of the line your appliance is on.

Average appliance lifespans, according to a National Association of Home Builders study:

Energy matters too. ENERGY STAR says an old refrigerator uses about 20% more energy than a new certified model.

AC Repair in Plano: 5 Checks Before You Call

Plano summers push air conditioners hard. The Dallas area logged 55 days of 100 degrees or more in 2023, according to the National Weather Service. In many Plano homes, the indoor unit also sits in an attic that gets far hotter than that. ENERGY STAR says heating and cooling use nearly half of the energy in a typical home.

When your AC stops cooling, these five checks take a few minutes:

  1. Thermostat. Make sure it's set to Cool and below the room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
  2. Breaker. Check the breakers for both the indoor unit and the outdoor unit.
  3. Air filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow. ENERGY STAR advises checking it monthly in summer and changing it at least every 3 months.
  4. Drain line. Your AC pulls water out of the air and drains it away. If that line clogs, a safety float switch can shut the whole system off, as Carrier explains. Water in the drain pan is the giveaway.
  5. Ice on the lines. Frost on the copper line or indoor coil means airflow or refrigerant trouble. Turn the system off and let it thaw before running it again.

Air Conditioning Repair in Plano

When the checks above don't fix it, the problem is inside the system. Our air conditioning repair covers capacitors, contactors, fan motors, frozen coils and float switches. We repair central air systems in homes across Plano.

That last one surprises people. Kenmore doesn't make appliances. The first three digits of a Kenmore model number show the real maker. A model starting with 110 was built by Whirlpool, 796 by LG, and 417 by Electrolux. That tells us exactly which parts fit.

Plano Appliance Repair Questions

Can I send a photo of the problem before you come out?

Yes. Send a WhatsApp photo of the error code and the model tag to 214-406-5754. The code and model number often point to the failed part. That helps us prepare and bring the right part.

My dishwasher leaves a white film. Is it broken?

Usually not yet. A white film is often hard water scale, which is common in Plano. Clean the filter, run a descaling product and keep rinse aid filled. If the film stays or the dishwasher fills slowly, the inlet valve or spray arms may need repair.

Do you fix built in refrigerators in west Plano homes?

Yes, when they're from the brands we repair, such as KitchenAid, GE, Bosch and Whirlpool. Built in refrigerators in Willow Bend and Legacy area homes often fail from control boards, fans or sensors. We check the error code and board first, then explain the fix before any work.

My AC shut off and there's water in the drain pan. What happened?

Most likely the condensate drain line clogged and the safety float switch shut the system off. That switch protects your ceiling from water damage. Clearing the line often gets the AC running again. If the pan keeps filling, call Mayfair Enterprises at 214-406-5754 for a repair.
